New Century Initiative (NCI) on the 30th of April 2022, observed the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Delegates ward congress/ election in Enugu State.
NCI is an organization that promotes inclusion and good governance in Nigeria.
We mobilized observers as a systematic way of enhancing democracy to observe the PDP ward delegates' congress with a specific purpose of ensuring inclusion. We deployed observers to all the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu state comprising 260 wards.
In the course of the exercise, we as a partner in the advancement of democracy identified a few areas where political parties can strengthen their processes in the future.
1. There were records of delay and late kick-off for the exercise which demands improvement from both INEC and political parties.
2. Voting ended late in some wards as recorded.
3. There were changes in the congress venue, which affected the level of participation.
Nonetheless, we commend the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) officials for being committed to conducting a free and fair election.
We commend the polling officials and security agencies for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful, free, and credible democratic process.
There's a high record of women and youth participation in the process generally.
We hope that the future exercise will address the issue of time, more youth and women inclusion; and minimize possible traces of parallel congress at different levels.
Finally, we congratulate voters for being patient, civil, and democratic throughout the process.
